There was an article in this Sunday’s paper about the upcoming tour of West Side Story. One sentence made me stop and re-read it a number of times. (Quoting David Saint) “(And) Bernstein wanted to be remembered as a great classical composer, but he said, ‘I’m very aware that on my tombstone it will say, “The man who wrote ‘West Side Story.’”’”  The punctuation that ended that sentence just made my gears come to a screeching halt.

I am not one of the big road warriors out there. I travel just enough to maintain silver status with the airline (that’s their lowest level.) I travel just enough to keep from going stir crazy in the office.   I travel just enough that, while I may look familiar, the people at the rental car booth don’t exactly know who I am.

My wife was cleaning out boxes the other day and showed me a couple of books she wanted me to take to the used-book store. I’m a bookkeeper. No, not the accountant type (after all, I am an internal auditor – I don’t do original work); but the kind who hoardes books. I greatly resist (nigh onto sickness) the idea of taking anything to the used-book store (except myself – to buy more books.) I opened one of the books, read one line, and instantly agreed to take these vile, demon-spawned tools of really yucky advice out of that bastion of sensibility I call my home.

Recently I got the chance to attend the D23 Expo in Anaheim California. For those who don’t know, D23 is a Disney sponsored “community of Disney fans.” The D23 Convention is three days of everything Disney — parks, movies, television, games — an immersion for the fan in the history and the future of the company.
