Certification Performance Awards
Everyone who earns an IIA certification is a winner, exemplifying commitment and professionlism in the internal auditing field. The following awards are provided to individuals, organizations or institutes that achieve exemplary scores or offer exemplary support to the program.

William S. Smith Awards
The William S. Smith Award is named in honor of William S. Smith, CIA, The IIA's first chairman of the Board of Regents, a former IIA chairman of the board, and a driving force behind the development of the Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) program. Awards are based on individual performance on the core exam parts (Parts 1, 2, and 3). Prior to the launch of year-round computer-based testing in April 2008, The IIA presented the William S. Smith Award to the top-scoring candidates in the CIA® program during each exam cycle (May and November). With year-round testing, award recipients must pass each exam part on their first attempt within one year of taking the first exam part. Each calendar year, the following criteria will be used to determine award recipients:

  • The William S. Smith Gold Medal Award is presented to the highest-scoring candidate for the calendar year. The Gold Medalist receives an all-expense-paid trip to The IIA's Annual International Conference, where the award is presented.
  • The William S. Smith Silver Medal Award is presented to the second-highest scoring candidate for the calendar year. The Silver Medalist will be recognized and presented with the award at a local IIA institute ceremony.
  • The William S. Smith Bronze Medal Award is presented to the third-highest scoring candidate for the calendar year. The Bronze Medalist will be recognized and presented with the award at a local IIA institute ceremony.
  • The William S. Smith Student Highest Achievement Award is presented to the full-time student with the highest score for the calendar year. The recipient receives an all-expense-paid trip to The IIA's Annual International Conference, where the award is presented.
  • The William S. Smith Certificate of Excellence is presented to the ten candidates with the next-highest scores following that of the Bronze Medalist. The recipients receive a free registration to an IIA seminar or conference and are recognized and presented with the award at a local IIA institute ceremony.
  • The William S. Smith Certificate of Honor is presented to the 50 candidates with the next-highest scores following those of the Certificate of Excellence recipients. These recipients are recognized and presented with the award at a local IIA institute ceremony.
