The 40th Anniversary of The IIA’s Flagship Designation – The CIA

40th Anniversaryl

Have you seen the video celebrating the Certified Internal Auditor’s 40th Anniversary? Many certification candidates took advantage of an anniversary promotion offered during August which included an application fee waiver for those who signed up by the deadline.

Celebrate the 40th anniversary with us by becoming CIA certified. All candidates who complete all parts of the CIA exam with a passing grade during the anniversary year will receive a special certificate commemorating the momentous occasion.

Now, take a step back in time with us.

CIA: The Challenge of the Future

In 1976, The IIA celebrated its 35th anniversary and in a book to celebrate the occasion, IIA co-founder Victor Z. Brink devoted a chapter to “The Challenge of the Future.” At that point, the fledgling CIA designation was only three years old and still had yet to achieve strong global recognition.

Brink defined one challenge as “Maintaining the Momentum of the CIA Program,” stating that “IIA members have already demonstrated a strong professional interest by joining The Institute and, for that reason, should be more motivated to acquire the certificate.”

Brink also noted that The IIA’s mission was to serve not only members, but the profession of internal auditing as well. The CIA credential was designed to address the needs of both. It served the needs of members with the ambition to subject themselves to a rigorous exam that would define a level of professional competency and provide an attainable measure of having achieved it. By allowing non-members to achieve the certification, it bolstered the credibility of the profession by establishing standards and defining a framework of job responsibility.

Like any new key initiative, the launch of the CIA brought unforeseen consequences. But because of the foresight of the organization’s leadership in realizing the potential benefit for both members and the profession at large, they declared the certification program as a “vital part of the future success of The Institute and…a major dimension of the challenge of the future.”
