Co-President’s Message

September 2011

Welcome to the Ocean State Chapter of The Institute of Internal Auditors!

Our 2011-2012 Chapter year has officially kicked-off, and we’d like to start by saying “Thank You!” to our members and non-member colleagues, who continue to come out and participate in Chapter activities and events year after year.  Your involvement and dedication to the Internal Audit profession and the Ocean State Chapter has been at the heart of our success.  So Thank You very much!

We closed out our 2010-2011 Chapter Year on a tremendous note by regaining our GOLD Status under The IIA’s Chapter Achievement Program!  And what does GOLD status represent? Simply put, we achieved GOLD-level recognition by The Institute of Internal Auditors by excelling in three primary areas: Service to our Members, Service to our Profession, and overall Chapter Administration.  We pride ourselves on continuing to provide a consistent program of educational and development opportunities, offering CPE credits towards certification programs, providing outreach and scholarship opportunities through our Academic Relations Committee, and to provide social network opportunities for our membership community.

And are you looking for CPEs?
We hosted five seminar events last year, offering a total of 24 CPEs!!

We’re kicking off September in high gear: First, we’ve got a social networking event lined up for September 20th at Chelo’s on the Waterfront in Warwick, RI.  Next we’ve got our first seminar event on “Ethics” scheduled for September 30th.  We’ll continue to build our event program for the remainder of the Chapter Year.
“Stay Tuned” for details by visiting our website and watching for our e-mail communications.

We’d also like to take a moment to reflect on some recent changes to our Board of Governors.  Long-time member Ken Senus tendered his resignation after many years of dedicated, compassionate, and tireless service to our Board and Profession.  Even after leaving the Internal Audit Profession to expand his career in Operations & Technology, Ken continued on as an active Board member helping and supporting our initiatives, and advocating for the Internal Audit Profession.  Many thanks to Ken for his commitment to our Chapter.  We wish him all the best!  We must also extend a warm welcome to our newest Board of Governor, Suzanne Parenteau.  Suzanne had already been working with our Board over the years in a non-Governor capacity, actively helping and supporting our various sub-committees wherever possible.  We look forward to Suzanne’s continued contribution to our Chapter!

Our mission is to continue charting a course that focuses on three core elements:

1. Advocating and promoting the value of the internal audit profession, internal audit activities, and the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards) promulgated by The Institute of Internal Auditors.

2. Providing professional educational and development opportunities to expand and strengthen knowledge in the internal auditing profession, and to provide continuing professional education (CPE) credits towards certification programs.

3. Provide forums and social network opportunities for internal auditors to share information and experiences.

On behalf of The IIA Ocean State Chapter Board of Governors, a warm welcome once again to our 2011-2012 Chapter Year!   We encourage you to visit our website often and watch for News and Upcoming Events, welcome you to join us at our program events and activities, and invite all your ideas and aspirations of involvement with the Ocean State Chapter.  Don’t forget to join us on LinkedIn for information and discussion exchange, updates on program events, and networking opportunities within our Internal Audit community.

An internal audit activity must obtain an external assessment every five years to be in conformance with the Standards. The IIA is looking for QA volunteers. CHAPTER PROFILE

The Ocean State Chapter, formerly the Providence Chapter, of The IIA was founded on September 26, 1979 by a small group of internal auditors who belonged to the Boston Chapter. They decided there was enough interest in the Providence area to begin a separate unit.  From that small break-away group, the membership has grown to more than 300, representing more than 80 businesses, universities, and government agencies located throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Through monthly meetings and seminars, the Chapter provides a varied program of education and networking for its members.

Please contact one of our Board of Governors with questions about membership, Chapter activities, or internal auditing in general. We welcome your questions and suggestions on how we can serve you better. For a listing of Chapter contacts, please refer to the Chapter Leadership tab.
