A message from the President

President’s Message – November 2008
Aloha,
Thanks go to Don Sealey for inviting the members of the Air Transport Association Audit Panel to attend our October luncheon meeting. I’m glad we had a chance to share time with this distinguished group of CAEs from across the industry. One of its members is Steve Geopfert from Continental Airlines, who offered to speak to our group on Value Added Auditing, a favorite topic of his that he used during his tenure as IIA International Chair. He granted permission for us to post the presentation on our Members Only site for those that couldn’t attend in person. We’ll keep past presentations available for a while for your reference, along with prior newsletters as a benefit of your membership. Access is free with your IIA membership so if you haven’t already done so, please register at theiia.org and see what other non-public resources are available to IIA members.
One of our Chapter’s prime objectives this year is to increase the awareness and certification levels of our members. I encourage you to consider one of the IIA certifications that include Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®), Certified Government Accounting Professional® (CGAP®), Certified Financial Services Auditor® (CFSA®) and Certification in Control Self-Assessment® (CCSA®). The CIA® designation is still the only globally accepted certification for internal auditors. The other specialty designations are more industry-specific and also allow you to demonstrate your knowledge and professionalism. All the exams are now held in a computer-based format and can be taken at your convenience, which is a lot better than the way it used to be under a twice a year, paper and pencil format. Please go to the theiia.org for information on how to register and obtain training materials for the exams. I assure you it will be a professionally rewarding experience.
This months’ program will be on Unclaimed Property and will feature our own Christine Ohashi along with Colleen Ajifu and Carrie Sekiguchi-Shingaki from the State of Hawaii. I hope to see you on November 18. You may find the session rewarding in more ways than one.
Dave Gire CIA®
