Incident Response and Forensic Analysis has become everyday fare. Intentional or unintentional exposure of personal identifiable information (PII), accounting fraud and other events that cause financial loss and other tangible harm to businesses can occur everyday.  When these events happen, it takes certain actions to preserve evidence that can be used to reconstruct details leading up to it.  We will discuss the steps necessary to collect evidence and return to normal business.

The steps to be discussed are:

•        Incident Containment and Damage Assessment

–       Determine nature and extent of incident through network and system log analysis

–       Take appropriate measures to contain the intruder, if an attack is still active

•        Collect and Analyze Digital Evidence

–       Utilize forensic analysis tools to gather digital evidence from PC’s, servers, PDA’s, etc.

–       Maintain proper chain-of-custody for future court proceedings

•        Recover from the Incident and Resume Normal Operations

–       Identify the means of attack and address any exploited security vulnerabilities

–       Conduct system restoration to resume normal operations

–       Analyze the Incident and provide insight as to how to prevent similar incident in the future
