10 Mistakes to Avoid in Risk Management
By Brad Wright
Senior Manager, Protiviti
February 9, 2010

It is fashionable today to talk about the role of risk management in the global financial crisis.  Indeed, risk management had a role – a very important one.  As we look back and closely examine what has transpired, we often hear the same questions expressed with a noticeable point of inflection in the voice pitch: What were they thinking?  What did they know?  How did they let this happen?  Because the crisis has had such ominous consequences to the economy and our very way of life, we thought it appropriate to step back and reflect on why risk management fails.  Accordingly, the presentation will explore ten common risk management mistakes and how they can be avoided.  It will be based on Protiviti’s collective experiences in working with many companies as well as seeking to understand significant failures observed over the years.

Brad Wright has over seven years experience providing business consulting and internal audit services to public and private companies in the hospitality, manufacturing, entertainment, financial services and healthcare industries.  He has assisted numerous clients with their Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance efforts during which he has conducted risk assessments, documented critical business processes, identified inherent business risks and tested the related internal controls and developed action items for management to remediate internal control design and operational deficiencies.  Brad also has extensive experience leading Automated Clearing House (ACH) compliance reviews and serves as the ACH subject matter expert for Protiviti’s West Region.  Prior to his internal audit experience, Brad worked as an external auditor with Arthur Andersen, LLP.

Learning Objectives:  The presentation will explore ten common risk management mistakes and how they can be avoided. It will include real world examples of why risk management failed for some companies.
