January 2013 Meeting

Topic:    Microsoft Access for Internal Audit

Instructor:           Simon Petravick, CIA, CPA

Simon is a Professor of Accounting at Bradley University and coordinator of Bradley’s Internal Audit Education Partnership program. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in auditing and computer assisted audit techniques.  Prior to coming to Bradley in 1994, he taught at DePaul University for 3 years. He also has 4 years of public accounting and 6 years of banking work experience.

Simon joined the CIC IIA in 2002. He has served on our chapter’s Board of Governors, Academic Relations committee, and as our chapter’s web master. He is also an active member of the Illinois CPA Society.  He has made presentations at meetings hosted by the Central Illinois and Indianapolis IIA chapters, Illinois CPA Society, Central Illinois Institute of Management Accountants, and American Accounting Association.

Topic Description:  This session will provide a hands-on introduction to Microsoft Access 2010. Participants should have basic familiarity with the Windows 7 operating system.

It is designed for individuals who have limited or no experience with Access and would like to better understand how the program operates and can be used by internal auditors to analyze data.

Specifically, the session will cover:

•             Creating a database and importing data

•             Creating one table queries

•             Creating two table queries

•             Summarizing data by grouping and crosstabs

•             Selecting data by various criteria

•             Filtering data

•             Identifying unmatched and duplicate records in databases

•             Creating new data in tables by using functions

Due to limited seating in the computer lab, participation is limited to the first 26 registrations we receive.
