Session Title: Primary Components of the Federal Government's Financial Report
Purpose: To understand America's financial condition and fiscal outlook, our profession should be familiar with the Financial Report of the US Government.

Speaker Bio: Michael Hansen is a Senior Financial Auditor for the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in Dallas. He has been with the GAO for over 7 years and most of his work has focused on the U. S. government wide consolidated financial statements (CFS) audit. For the third year, he continues to lead key audit work in the complex audit issue area of federal loans receivable and loan guarantee liabilities, and work at the Department of Education. Other audit issue areas he has worked on include certain agencies’ financial statement restatements and related party transactions. In addition to the CFS and IRS financial statement audits, he contributed to performance audits of the Navy’s use of purchase cards and Justice’s efforts to collect on restitution of white-collar financial fraud cases.
Before coming to the GAO, Michael was a manager at Navigant Consulting. He received both an undergraduate degree in Finance and his MBA in Accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington. He is a Certified Public Accountant and he stays abreast of accounting and auditing issues.
Michael has received several awards for his commitments towards improving government accountability. They include the GAO Managing Directors Award in recognition of exemplary contributions to the audit of the consolidated financial statements of the U.S. government; the GAO Managing Directors Team Award for his review of certain federal agencies restatements of their previous years financial statements; and a GAO Honor Award in recognition of his volunteer service for the homeless. For more than 7 years, he has been an active member of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA). He continues to serve as the Dallas Chapter’s Treasurer for the third year and the Director of Early Careers for his second year. As an AGA leader, Michael has also received the AGA Dallas Chapter President’s Award and the Chapter Ambassador Award..
