The Twin Cities Chapter of the IIA is a vibrant organization that has served its 1400 plus members and supported the profession for over 60 years.  I am both honored and excited to serve as its President for the 2008-2009 year and I will continue to emphasize its key goals of service to its members, service to the profession and excellence in chapter administration.

The past year has seen record membership, strong financial performance and broad offerings of both training classes and roundtables for the chapter members and guests. The chapter achieved Platinum status with IIA National, one of a limited number of chapters so honored, and we received this recognition for the 7th year in a row. Platinum status requires a variety of successes against the three key goals mentioned above and I promise to direct and lead our efforts to achieve that honor again this year.

So why should we work in or care about internal audit and other internal control-related functions?

The responsibilities that we have as professional internal auditors are large and growing larger in our more complex and global world. More importantly I am convinced that our successful execution of those responsibilities is critical to healthy, growing, ethical and human institutions and systems of all sorts, whether they be businesses, communities, governments, religious or social organizations or anywhere else where groups of people join together to accomplish tasks.  I’ve been impressed with the energy and professionalism of the many volunteers and attendees at our events, so between these responsibilities that we have and the capabilities that we bring I know that the work we do adds value and makes a difference to our home organizations.

Looking ahead to our calendar we have a lot to look forward to for the year. You’ll see it on our web pages so take a look periodically.  Some new highlights are...the CIA and other certification exams through IIA National are fully functional on line…our partner relationship with the University of Minnesota has the IIA National exam review course available through continuing education...and we’re adding to our social and networking events and increasing our efforts to advocate internal auditing in the college classroom.

All this in addition to our core offerings of training and roundtables illustrates that we do have a vibrant organization. Take advantage of it!  Get involved, be a consumer, or a knowledge expert sharing your expertise, or a volunteer making our events and organization happen.

I look forward to an exciting year and seeing you at one of our events.

August 2008 President’s Newsletter Update

The Twin Cities Chapter of the IIA begins the 2008-2009 year in phenomenal shape and well positioned to emphasize our key goals of service to members, service to the profession and excellence in chapter administration.

Record membership, strong financial performance and broad offerings of training classes and roundtables top the list

At over 1400 members we are one of the 10 largest chapters in the U.S. and we’re growing. That’s an impressive amount of experience, audit knowledge and networking for you to draw upon.  I’m consistently impressed with how willing our members are to talk about and share their work and ideas. And the work we do continues to increase in importance to our companies and organizations. For example, you might know that Standard and Poors will soon be contemplating the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) activities of companies as part of assigning a credit rating. Across the range of activities in an ERM process there are a number of touchpoints where audit can and should be involved, so watch for opportunities to learn and contribute in this area.

Financially the chapter finished the past year with a cash surplus and has just finished its long range plan and budget for 2008-2009. We are again planning a cash surplus, yet the budget includes plans for several additional training programs, an increased outreach and investment on college campuses to promote our profession, and some expansion of our member networking and social events. Stay in touch on our webpage at: http://www.theiia.org/chapters/index.cfm/home.page/cid/16

Finally, our core offerings of 2008-2009 training and roundtables are already well under way with a number of them posted on our website “Events” section. Refer to Page 6 of the newsletter for the Upcoming Events.

I will again urge you to get involved, be a consumer, or a knowledge expert sharing your expertise, or a volunteer making our events and organization happen. See you at one of our events!
