Dear Atlanta IIA Chapter Members,

As we embark on a new year I want to thank all the members of the Atlanta Chapter for their unwavering support in 2008. Whether you attended chapter events, volunteered, served on a committee, or on the Board of Governors our success in 2008 was because of you. It is your chapter and each of you has contributed to its success. I am honored to serve with you.

As I reflect back on the past year the one word I keep using to describe 2008 is “unprecedented”. So many things happened last year that most of us have never experienced before. The events of last year just reinforced in my mind the importance  our profession has in today’s dynamic world and how we as internal auditors will continue to impact and shape the future. With this in mind we can look forward to 2009 as both a challenge and an opportunity.

Last month I attended the IIA Mid Year meetings in Orlando along with several other Atlanta Chapter leaders. In fact our Chapter has seven of our members serving on IIA International Committees. On the first day I was fortunate enough to be able to talk with the new President of the IIA, Richard Chambers.  Those of you who attended the Big Splash event will remember that Richard kicked off the program as our first key note speaker. Richard and I talked about the myriad of challenges the IIA faced in 2009 and what some of the strategic plans were to move the IIA forward. Then we discussed the Atlanta Chapter. I came away from the conversation with two thoughts. First, that Richard is genuinely interested in our chapter activities and second, how passionate Richard is about leading the IIA through these challenges and capitalizing on future opportunities.

I used the term “unprecedented” to describe 2008 and I believe the Atlanta Chapter had an unprecedented year in 2008. Let’s see: we offered programs that totaled roughly 40 CPE’s at ten chapter meetings and one Big Splash event (thanks again to all the volunteers and sponsors that made this event happen), we held two CIA review courses led by Dr. Glenn Sumners, we sponsored ACL courses, we held the biggest and best Student Day event ever at Kennesaw State University, we furthered our partnership in the Internal Audit Education Program with KSU, we had outstanding representation at the IIA International Conference in San Francisco in July where we experienced first hand the scale and complexity of this event and learned how we will make Atlanta 2010 great. I could go on but suffice it to say that our chapter took on the challenges of 2008 and turned them into opportunities for our members.

So what about 2009, the New Year, what lies ahead for us at the Atlanta IIA? Well, for starters the Atlanta Chapter turns 60 on February 13, 2009. You should make plans to attend this very special chapter meeting at the Villa Christina. Look for a special pull out section on Internal Audit in the February edition of the Atlanta Business Chronicle. We will have our annual Student Day in March and Big Splash II in September. Oh yes, and there is preparation for that International Conference in 2010 that is now only 18 months away.

I will close by thanking you again for your tremendous support and by suggesting that you accept my challenge to get involved with your chapter in 2009. All volunteers are welcome, no questions asked. By accepting this challenge you will open the door to opportunity.

Sincerely,

David Bilko
President, Atlanta Chapter
