President's Message

Message from John Byrd
NCFIIA President
October 31, 2008

Fellow IIA NCF Chapter Members,

Kind of scary that another whole month has passed.  The horrific stock market might spook a few people from the stores, but the frightening though of packed malls, bumper to bumper traffic and multiple light changes are right around the corner.

Well it that time of year again—time to get out and support your party.  We, of course, are not talking election here– we are talking the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” in Jacksonville.  Support those Gators they will need all the help they can get.

Speaking of the Gators and votes— we will be serving up pizza and drinks at our student event on Election Day, Tuesday, November the 4th.  We will be set-up from 11:00 to 2:00 near Gerson Hall passing out information on the internal audit profession and our chapter.  We will be sharing this event with Gleim Publications who has good success with these type of events in the past.  Student recruitment is a main goal for the chapter this year.  The Advocacy Committee is looking into a couple more events for next year.

We do have a technical internal audit topic for the November (Friday the 14th) roundtable discussions.  Ginger Bigbie from Shands will be leading us on "Concepts for Establishing a Control Matrix Based upon COSO".  It is in room 4150 on the 4th floor of the 1329 Building at Shands on SW 16th St., so bring your lunch or stop by the Deli on the 1st floor beforehand.  Note the early start time of 11:30.  And don't forget to bring a canned good for St. Francis House.

Our last roundtable speaker, Ian Woodall from the tiny country of Andorra was great—he had been literally to the top of the world—twice!  And is planning a third this next year.  The stories and motivation along the way were incredible. Anyone interested in his book, just send him an e-mail at http://www.taoofeverest.com/.

Don’t forget about the IIA's 2008 Refer-A-Friend Campaign—Play it Forward.  Now through December 1st, you can spin your way into great prizes including Amazon.com gift cards and the grand prize-- an iPod® Touch and free music downloads (a $500 value). It's easy to bop to the top in this campaign. For each friend or colleague that joins as a result of your referral, you receive one entry in the grand prize drawing and one $5 gift card. The more friends that join, the greater your number of entries in the grand prize drawing, and the more gift cards you receive! Your friend will receive a discounted individual membership of just $95, and we will waive their $25 application fee. New Audit Groups will receive an additional 20% off already reduced rates. 2008 Refer-A-Friend Campaign details are subject to change without

Plan to attend the December Chapter meeting (Thursday the 11th) at the Ironwood Golf Course on NE 39th, where we will learning about A Miracle on 39th Street:  Auditors with a Personality.  You will learn a few things about yourself and others as well.  This will be followed by the sequel of last year’s Christmas party.  If you like games, good food, and revelry you want to be there.

Watch out for tricks out there on tonight—and Tuesday!

John Byrd

Your President
