He also received two of The IIA's highest awards: the Victor Z. Brink Award for Distinguished Service in 1987 and the Bradford Cadmus Memorial Award in 1992. In 2008, Douglas Murray wrote the following tribute to Jim Hooper to more fully describe the type of individual Jim was. These words are powerful and provide an inspiration for all internal auditors. Doug wrote: I was deeply touched and honored when I saw that Jim Hooper had a scholarship fund in his name... Jim Hooper definitely deserves to be a part of the process that develops and educates our future internal auditors. Jim was committed to the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). While working for him from 1997 to 2000 at Southern California Edison (SCE), he encouraged me, as a new auditor, to be involved in the profession by joining the IIA. Although he wasn't affiliated with the Information Systems Audit and Controls Association (ISACA) and because I was an IT Auditor, he also encouraged me to become a member of that organization too. Jim was a man of high integrity. He was very supportive, personable, kind, and genuinely cared about all his employees. He took a personal interest in each and every one of us. He was sympathetic to the needs of his auditors. He encouraged each of us to recognize our Audit department colleagues and employees outside the department, who went above and beyond his/her normal duties, to achieve business objectives, by nominating them for the Edison International "High Five" award. As a recipient of a few of these awards, I know how it feels to be appreciated for my hard work. As General Auditor of the Audit department at SCE, Jim was more like a father figure than my boss. His auditors were his second "family." He was an easy going, down-to-earth, gentle giant (he was a big and tall man) who was easily approachable, considerate, and easy to talk to. He backed up his auditors through thick and thin. He started a new philosophy for the audits department, "... a partnership with management." We became the department that would help invoke change to ensure the future success of the company. He believed in relationship management with the business to develop strong relationships. He had great social skills and wherever he went, he made new friends easily. Jim believed in not only an open door but also in a revolving door policy. He encouraged his "family" to spread their wings and try new challenges by transferring/promoting into other departments (business units) or even finding something new outside the company. If and when his "family" wanted to come back to the Audit department, he welcomed them with open arms. I observed quite a few auditors who left the department and come back!!! I can't say enough about Jim Hooper. But I do hope I've said enough that will give you an insight of the kind of man he was. He was selfless and enjoyed his involvement with the IIA and the profession. He is missed by all who have had the opportunity and privilege to know and work for him. He was a GREAT man!! |
