Be an Advocate – Promote the Profession!

On the back of the IIA’s brochure “A New Prospective: Enhancing Understanding of the Internal Audit Profession” they have the following thought question: “What if… we as professional internal auditors are our own worst enemies when it comes to elevating our profession and building awareness of our value?”

Oftentimes we tend to hide behind our desire to be humble or even our insecurities.  But the best person to talk about what you do as an Internal Auditor is YOU!!!  For the 2011-2012 Chapter year, we are going to give you tools and resources to promote your position and highlight your valuable contributions within your organization as well as for the profession.  Brochures and other promotional materials from the IIA will be distributed at our chapter events and we want to share experiences we have as Chapter members and friends.  Please email us at iiia.slc.web.admin@gmail.com and share your experiences (good, bad, and especially humorous) and/or resources and best practices you’ve used in talking about what internal auditing is and what you do for a living.  We’ll include these in future newsletters and/or share them at our chapter meetings.

Michael Williams wrote an article in The Internal Auditor back in April 2003 titled “The audit profession: center stage; ten simple strategies can help revitalize the profession's image by increasing awareness of internal auditing and dispelling old stereotypes.”  Long title but great article – see http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m4153/is_2_60/ai_100075075/pg_3/ if you want to read for yourself.  One of the things he suggested is to just spread the word one person at a time.

“The next time someone asks what you do for a living, for example, do not just provide a cursory response and then quickly change the subject. Instead, take the time to explain your job and to describe internal auditing's role in the organization. Acknowledge the stereotypes, but then dispel them by describing the truly dynamic and value-added nature of internal audit work…Never underestimate the potential of marketing by work-of-mouth.” Start with a family member, coworker, or friend.  Practice what you will say to explain what you do for work and what you enjoy about your job.  We will also be looking into providing you with opportunities to promote the internal auditing profession.  You can volunteer to help at a Chapter event or on a committee, speak at a school, assist with the Academic Relations Committee, bring a colleague and/or friend to a Chapter event, etc. Feel free to contact me or any of the officers or board members with questions, comments, and suggestions.  I appreciate your contributions, participation, and support with the Chapter and hope we can build on the momentum of previous Chapter presidents!

We belong to a great profession!  Let’s not be our worst enemies when it comes to creating awareness and elevating our profession.  Let your voice be heard and promote the profession one person at a time!
