Philadelphia Chapter – Institute of Internal Auditors President’s Message – April 2008
To my Friends and Colleagues of the Philadelphia Chapter
As we move into April the chapter is really kicking into high gear. At the last count, we had over 350 registered for the Spring Conference making it the fifth consecutive conference of blockbuster proportions. The 2008-9 Officers and Board has been approved by the Board of Governors and will be presented at the Spring Conference for vote by the general membership. (Sorry, if you want to know who they are, you will have to either attend on Friday or wait for the website update). All I can say is that I know each of the incoming officers personally and can vouch that they will keep the chapter operating at the level that you have come to expect.
Personally, I face this conference with mixed feelings. I am excited at the turnout, the great work of the Spring Conference Committee, (Chaired by First Vice President Michelle Hayes), the support from our exhibitors and the quality of the speakers, beginning with the keynotes, Laura Unger and Matt O’Donnell. This is mixed with the knowledge that Friday will be the last time that I address such a broad cross section of our membership as President of the Philadelphia Chapter. This year is going by far too quickly, yet it is the continuous fusion of new talent, enthusiasm and ideas that keeps the chapter able to bring fresh perspectives and continuously improve. If I have contributed in a small way to the foundation and the future of this chapter, then this has been a worthwhile year.
One of the challenges and the joys or a professional career is the opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself. When you play in a field of talented people, it cannot help but result in self improvement. In short, the more you put in, the more you receive. Have I said that before?
Looking ahead, our May 9th event will include a presentation by Professor Parveen Gupta of Lehigh University. Professor Gupta, head of Lehigh’s Accounting Department (rated by Business week as #1) spent a year with the SEC, researching the direction and impact on business of AS5 and the new COSO Model. He will be sharing insights with us from the SEC’s perspective. This three CPE event is not to be missed.
I invite you to join me at these last two events of the 2007-8 chapter year. Let’s finish it up with a flurry!
Warm regards,
Joe Murphy President – Philadelphia Chapter - IIA |
