Charlotte Chapter President's Message

President’s Message
By Joe Oringel

November/December 2011

Happy Thanksgiving.  I hope you're reading this after having enjoyed a nice and peaceful week with friends and family.  We were fortunate enough to spend Thanksgiving with my sister's family so we had six children between the ages of 5 and 12.  It was very nice, but not quite so peaceful.

We're more than 1/3 of the way through our IIA Chapter year, with the kickoff and two very successful full-day events behind us.  Kudos to our Programs Committee and Registration Committee for handling our first two-track event on November 14, where we hosted both a day-long Financial Services track and also an Anti-Corruption track on the FCPA and UK Bribery Acts.  These two tracks preceded a joint session by PCAOB on current issues and audit quality that was also very well-received.

Registration is now open for our December and January events (linked to be verified) and both feature highly recognized speakers.  Don Rabon was the 2008 Speaker of the Year for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), and will be presenting on Fraud Interviewing.  He is a retired Deputy Director for the North Carolina Department of Justice, and has over 30 years of experience leading investigations.  This session will be held on Monday December 12 at the DoubleTree SouthPark, so it will be convenient for holiday shopping.

On Monday January 23, Danny Goldberg will return to the Charlotte Chapter.  Danny was recently accepted as a speaker at the IIA International Conference this summer in Boston, so we are pleased to offer his full-day session on Effective Audit Planning and Engagement Risk Assessments to our local chapter members.

In addition to our blessings at home, I'm very thankful to work with such a terrific team of officers, committee chairs and volunteers for the Chapter.  Volunteering while making time for professional and family responsibilities is admired and appreciated.  On the subject of family responsibilities, congratulations to Chapter Secretary Sarah Miller and her family on the birth of their second child.  Daughter Sanibel  arrived in October.  Vice President Dan Smith and his wife Summer also welcomed a daughter Elizabeth Grace into their family this month.   On behalf of all Chapter members, thank you again for making time for the IIA given all the excitement at home.

Best wishes for an outstanding remainder of 2011 and an even better start to your 2012.  I look forward to seeing you at an IIA event in the near future.

Regards,

Joe Oringel -- President, Charlotte Chapter of the IIA  | 704.353.7000 | Joe.Oringel@VisualRiskIQ.com
