IIA Bermuda's Profile for the First Quarter

Trevor Brookes, Board Member - IIA Bermuda
Trevor joined RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd. in 2005 to lead their internal audit function. Prior to joining RenRe, he was the head of internal audit for an S&P 500 listed company. Trevor has been a Board member of the Bermuda Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors since its formation in 2001.
How did you get into Internal Auditing?
I started external auditing while pursuing the Canadian Chartered Accountant designation which gave me an excellent foundation to build from. Several years later, I became progressively more involved in the growing internal audit practice and found that it was much more interesting than I had expected. In 2000, just after leaving public practice, I took the CICA*CIA challenge exam and became a Certified Internal Auditor. There continues to be a shortage of internal audit talent so I would encourage others to consider this as a career path.
What Aspect of Your Work is Most Satisfying?
Internal Audit is unique in that it spans all aspects of the business and all levels of management. As a result, it is a great place for high potential staff to develop and I take personal satisfaction in seeing the development of people. I am very proud that four members the internal audit team at my former company are now themselves the heads of internal audit for public companies. We are planning to hire another member of RenRe’s internal audit staff early in 2009 and this is being targeted as a development opportunity for the right person.
