This week’s update is about the William S. Smith Awards. With testing available year-round, candidates will become certified year-round as well. Therefore, the Board of Regents has changed the awards process to recognizing the award winners on a yearly basis. The criteria for choosing award recipients will be as follows.

  • Recipients of the William S. Smith Awards will be judged on the combined score of Parts I, II, and III of the CIA exam.
  • Candidates must pass each part on their first attempt within one year of taking the first part.
  • Each calendar year, a Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal will be given for the top 3 scorers. The Gold Medal winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to The IIA’s Annual International Conference, where the award will be presented.
  • The William S. Smith Certificate of Excellence is presented to the ten candidates with the next highest scores following that of the Bronze Medalist. These recipients are recognized and presented with the award at a local IIA institute ceremony.
  • The William S. Smith Certificate of Honor is presented to the fifty candidates with the next highest scores following that of the Medalists and Certificate of Honor recipients. These recipients are recognized and presented with the award at a local IIA institute ceremony.
  • The William S. Smith Student Highest Achievement Award will be presented to the highest scoring full-time student. The Student Highest Achievement winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to The IIA’s Annual International Conference, where the award will be presented.

Look for next week’s Certification Weekly Update with an overview of the certification process from a candidate’s perspective, including application, registration, scheduling the exam, and receiving their certificate.
