IIA in Qatar encounters a Partner in Progress
February 3, 2008
Dear IIA member,
Communication to all members
On behalf of the Board of Governors of the local chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors I have the pleasure informing you that we have entered into a working relationship with the esteemed Scientific Accounting Association working under the Qatar University’s authority.
The Board had meetings with the Chairman, Dr Khalid N. Al-Khater and others and the Association’s Board of Directors has formally approved the co-operation of the two bodies.
This working relationship apart from bringing in benefits of alliance with the premier educational institution, Qatar University, will also help the process to be legalized as a body to operate in Qatar. The regulatory department requested IIA to cease public events with immediate effect in September 2007. This was the reason why no seminars could be held since September 2007. We trust that you will all understand and give your full co-operation henceforth.
The Scientific Accounting Association was established in October 2004 at Qatar University. The Association Chairman is Dr. Khalid Bin Naser Al- Khater. The Association held its first meeting on October, 13th 2004 in which the members of the Board of Directors were elected. The membership of the Association is about 350 members. This number represents the full and associate members of the Association in accordance with its regulations. The Association issues a membership card to prove the members' affiliation to the Association and enable them to benefit from the advantages granted to the members who fully pay their membership fees (only 100 QR). The Board of Directors has the full authority to manage the Association and the Board is formed of eight members elected by the general assembly and half of the eight members should be from the staff of the university which established the Association.
The Association’s objectives are to achieve the following:
- Improving the level of the accounting profession in Qatar
- Providing the opportunity to contribute to the academic thinking in the field of accounting.
- Exchange of academic products and ideas between the Association and other organizations and institutions.
- Giving advice and conducting the necessary research to raise the level of performance in accounting and audit areas.
To achieve its goals, the Associationstrives to:
- Encouraging research in accounting and audit subjects.
- Providing training courses and organizing consultation.
- Organizing conferences, study groups and academic competitions with the aim of investigating the issues concerning accounting and audit.
- Issue the " Accounting Magazine" to publish the research and studies in accounting and audit issues.
The IIA Board of Governors assures you of a very good mutual understanding and support from the Scientific Accounting Association to our Institute. Likewise, the IIA intends to support their endeavors. It is understood that the Scientific Accounting Association schedules periodic seminars, workshops and an annual conference (in English & Arabic) every year. We are working on our first joint event to be scheduled in March 2008. More details at a later stage. For the next few weeks we will schedule our own events and invite the Association’s members to attend and participate as well. Our Institute receives several benefits from this working relationship such as use of QU facilities like conference halls, joint memberships, sharing of professional expertise. We encourage all of you to become individual members of the Scientific Accounting Association as well. This way you can also reap individual benefits from your membership. Once we receive the member subscription forms, it will be forwarded to you for your subscription at QAR 100 per annum. Their financial year runs from September to August.
Naturally you will have many questions, but please reserve this to be addressed at our first public event which will be announced very soon.
Looking forward to your co-operation.
Yours faithfully
Chris Adonis
President 2007/8
