CBT Registration Begins in April

The IIA's new computer-based testing (CBT) system, will be rolled out in May, and will be available on a year-round basis. Candidates for IIA certifications - certified internal auditor (CIA), certified government auditing professional (CGAP), certified financial services auditor (CFSA), and certification in control self-assessment (CCSA) - can take the exams at more than 400 professional sites around the world at their convenience. The Institute has contracted with Pearson Vue, a provider of electronic testing administration, to provide sites and proctors, taking the responsibility off chapters and institutes to provide those services.

Registration started April 1, 2008, with testing to begin in May. According to Susan Lione, CIA, CCSA, CGAP, CFSA, IIA vice president of Professional Practices, once candidates are determined eligible to sit for the exam, they will be encouraged to schedule their exam as soon as possible. "The earlier you schedule your appointment, the better your chances of receiving the location, date, and time of your choice," she says. The registration process and timing may differ in countries in which the local IIA institute manages the registration process. Candidates should refer to this listof countries for contact information. Once a candidate completes the registration process and is determined eligible, he or she will have six months to sit for the exam. If a candidate doesn't pass an exam part, he or she must wait 90 days before being allowed to retest.

According to Lione, no extensive computer skills are needed, just the ability to use a mouse and a keyboard. Also, a short tutorial will be available online - and at the test site - for each examinee to review. The exam content will remain the same, although the number of exam questions will be reduced on the CIA exam. Questions will still appear in multiple-choice format with four options from which to choose. CIA candidates will have two hours and 45 minutes to complete each part of the exam, while specialty exam candidates will have three hours and 15 minutes. Please visit The IIA's Web site for the latest information about CBT registration.
