I have passed CIA Part 3 today in first attempt. Just came back home after the exam.
This is how i studied: Learned key terms and major concepts from gleim book. In gleim book, the important concepts are marked in black. Then solved the questions from Gleim software and then did hock software as well. I solved questions from hock which were not in gleim for additional practice. But you dont need 2 softwares. Gleim is more then enough. I revised each question and concepts 6-8 times. By the time i went to test today, i was scoring 95% + in gleim with complete conceptual understanding.
The questions in exams were average type. If you are fluent in part 3 contents, you will pass the exam comfortably. To become fluent, revise the materials 6- 8 times till you are scoring 90-95% in software and know all main concepts in gleim book.
IIA is testing concepts. If you are not fluent you are bound to get confused during actual testing. The test is throwing questions at you from diverse topics- one question can ask you about ISO , the next question can ask you about completeness test, then you move to next question and it can ask you to calculate A/R or quick ratio. Fluency in topics is key to pass the CIA part 3 in first go.
I did studied a lot- 200 hours + and i was very comfortable during testing. The questions are very similar as given in gleim but with twists, turns and reframing the question. Understanding the contents given in the gleim book is the best place to start. No need to go in detail but understanding main contents like EOQ, safety stock, JIT, MRP, ISO, TQM, sesitivity analysis etc.
The calculation questions were easy. Simple questions. If you know the subject matter, if you have practiced gleim couple of times, you will be able to solve them.
I did all CPA and CMA questions in gleim. All of them. I knew CIA test wont ask those questions. But the biggest benefit i got after solving those questions was fluency in concepts. In gleim there are CPA questions which ask you to calculate amortization of bond discount through effective interest method. It is a complex question but after solving the question, i understood discount bonds, amortization, effective interest method conceptually and fluently.
Concepts...concepts..concepts...thats the key.
