Tools for Internal Audit Practitioners
What can you, the internal audit practitioner, do to advocate the internal audit profession?

First and foremost: Do your job competently and professionally. This means you comply with The IIA's International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards). Secondly, communicate core messages to senior management and the audit committee. Make sure those in the front office and the boardroom are aware of internal auditing's role and value.

Consider the following:

  • Explain the role of internal auditing to all who ask ... and even those who don't!
  • Be prepared to answer FAQs about the internal audit profession.
  • Develop supportive mentoring relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Acquire the CIA certification.
  • Implement quality assurance and improvement programs.
  • Pursue continuing education.
  • Meet and network with people outside the profession to share knowledge about the profession of internal auditing.
  • Speak about the profession of internal auditing and audit-related topics at IIA chapter events, schools, local business organizations, etc.
  • Write articles for internal and external publications.
  • Participate in The IIA's International Committee structure.
