Quality Volunteers
The IIA uses a team of active internal auditor practitioners, led by a team leader and assisted by volunteers, to perform external quality assessment reviews. The external quality assessment team has three primary functions:

  1. Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the internal audit activity within the organization
  2. Offer potential "best practice" applications to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  3. Determine compliance with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards)

Volunteer Requirements
Volunteer team members should have the following qualifications:

Volunteer Benefits
Volunteering involves a commitment of time only. All travel, accommodation, and meal expenses are covered by The IIA. Participants also receive the following benefits:

  • Valuable learning experience while examining internal audit activities in different organizations
  • Hands-on experience to prepare internal audit activities for a future external assessment
  • Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours
  • Gift certificate to the IIA Research Foundation Bookstore

Volunteer Selection Process
When a customer engages The IIA to conduct a QA, The IIA staff will:

  • Determine the size of the team and the length of the engagement necessary to conduct the review.
  • Select a team leader and potential volunteers for the customer's review and selection. (Since the QA expenses are covered by the customer, geographic location is one of the criteria customers use in volunteer selection, in addition to auditing experience in the customer's industry.)
  • Contact the volunteers selected by the customer to determine their availability.
  • Confirm the selected and available volunteers with the customer for final selection.

Volunteer Expectations
Generally, an external quality assessment is scheduled for one or two weeks.

  1. The salaries and/or paid time off for all volunteers must be covered by the volunteer's company. All other expenses are paid by The IIA.
  2. Prior to the review, the selected volunteers are sent copies of The IIA Standards, the QA Manual, and the customer's self-study.
  3. The team assembles on a Sunday afternoon for training near the customer's location. The review begins the following day.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please complete the review team volunteer form. Contact The IIA by e-mail at quality@theiia.org or phone +1-407-937-1399 for additional information or assistance.
