Client-focused Services

In contrast to traditional, compliance-based auditing, Ontario Internal Audit’s services are based on a business consulting, or advisory/assistance, approach. The division helps its clients identify and manage risk, establish effective control systems, and maintain good governance and sound business practices.

Transitioning toward a progressive orientation proved somewhat difficult at times, as client operational managers often tended to view auditors with varying levels of distrust and trepidation. Many perceived auditors as highly critical and believed that audit work was performed too late to be of any value.

Now, the division works cooperatively with its audit clients, helping to improve their operations. This approach is particularly evident on projects that involve new programs or processes. By participating in projects during the design and start-up phase, Ontario’s auditors can help mitigate project risk by conducting workshops, monitoring progress, assisting with control systems design, and advising on the effectiveness of accountability and governance frameworks. The division helps its clients better understand potential pitfalls and identify areas for improvement. At the same time, internal auditing provides traditional assurance services to mature, fully operational programs and departments. When providing advisory services, the division always takes care to retain its independence and avoids taking on management’s role or performing their work.
