William G. Bishop IIIThe IIA Research Foundation
William G. Bishop III, CIA, Memorial Fund
As The Institute of Internal Auditors grows, we are reminded just how much former IIA President William G. Bishop III, CIA, contributed to the profession of internal auditing. His commitment to quality and efficiency was unparalleled, and his dedication to and pride in his profession were unwavering. He set an example based on the highest standards of integrity and honesty. Bill spent his professional life raising the level of proficiency and instilling in practitioners an understanding of the importance of the profession. He was an ardent supporter of internal audit research. Not only did he support funding a substantial portion of research through The IIA, he personally read the research and acted on it. Bill's leadership and his support of research have helped frame the new definition of internal auditing, the new practices framework, and many of the strategies for The IIA.

Bill's family members desire to have a living memory to their husband, father, and grandfather that will serve the profession Bill loved. To that end, the family provided that donations, in lieu of other memorials, be made to The IIA Research Foundation with the understanding that The Foundation would use the proceeds to honor Bill's memory and his commitment to advancing the profession of internal auditing.

Your contribution to The William G. Bishop III, CIA, Memorial Fund will support research to identify the global Common Body of Knowledge (CBOK). These studies will set new standards for the profession Bill championed. As the internal auditor's role in achieving effective organizational governance becomes more fully developed, it is essential that best practices be codified and applied and that professional auditors update their skills and knowledge accordingly. The structure of the research efforts would produce a series of modular studies that will develop a living library of the continuing evolution of the practice of internal auditing. These results, added to the current information available, will provide an encyclopedic framework of research results available to research providers and The IIA entities responsible for providing guidance to practitioners.

Although we have all suffered a great loss by his abrupt departure, the legacy Bill has left behind will continue to affect and influence all the people he touched and the profession he loved. Thanks to contributions such as yours, this legacy will be remembered for many years to come.
