In January 2004, The IIA's Educational Products area merged into The IIA Research Foundation (The Foundation). The merger capitalized on the powerful synergies of the two entities, as they both play pivotal strategic and operational roles in research and educational efforts.

For 29 years contributions to The Foundation have enabled it to support research and education in internal auditing and promote the internal audit profession. In 2004, The Foundation:

  • Worked to integrate the ROIA framework into the academic community.
  • Worked in unison with the staff at IIA headquarters to develop more concise research reports on emerging issues within the profession.
  • Initiated development of a comprehensive database of internal audit practice.
  • Continued to integrate educational products and research products.
  • Partnered with affiliates and other organizations to fund pertinent research studies.
  • Developed a three-year strategic plan.

A Foundation Committed to Research and Education
The Foundation has worked diligently over the years to build rapport with leading practitioners, academics, and researchers who share its commitment to the profession. The Foundation's Board of Trustees and Board of Research and Education Advisors is comprised of a dedicated group of individuals who believe in the importance of timely research.

The Foundation maintains a strong belief in research and publishing reports that both aid the practitioners in fulfilling their daily responsibilities and drive the profession forward. The Foundation's portfolio of researchers and writers studying the profession is world-class. Many of the published reports are used to support IIA conference and seminar programs.

The Foundation continually identifies and examines emerging business issues. Members of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Research and Education Advisors solicit suggestions from thought-leaders in internal auditing, academia, and related business professions. These suggestions are reviewed and approved by the Trustees as future research priorities. The priorities are published, and proposals are solicited from leading researchers, educators, and practitioners around the world. Grants are awarded based on the quality of proposals received and the expected contribution the project will make to the profession.

The William G. Bishop III, CIA, Memorial Fund
In memory of The IIA's late president, The William G. Bishop III, CIA Memorial Fund was established in 2004. The fund will be devoted to the study of the practice of internal auditing on a global basis. This study, the Common Body of Knowledge (CBOK), will be the main vehicle for collecting and disseminating this information. It will begin in 2005 and conclude with a series of research reports that will be available at the end of 2006. The results of these modular studies will be added to the current information available to provide an encyclopedic framework of research results for: research providers; the IIA elements responsible for creating the CIA and other examinations; and those providing guidance to practitioners.

Fundraising has been ongoing. During 2004, pledges in the amount of $282,000 were received. The next steps in the CBOK project include the identification of key topics for the first modules, the organization of the global survey component, and the coordination of the request for proposals process. Business and action plans have been developed to manage the project.
