The IIA Research Foundation Research Matching Grant Program
The Research Matching Grant Program was launched by The Foundation as a way to promote research at the local chapter level and encourage participation in the annual research competition sponsored by The Foundation. The program provides The Foundation's matching of research funds of 50 percent, up to a maximum of US $500 per chapter per year.

The research being conducted should contribute to the advancement of the internal audit profession; projects are typically of a more limited scope than projects normally conducted by The Foundation and should address topics of interest to the local membership. The Foundation prepares a list each year of potential research topics. These topics are based on suggestions submitted throughout the year to IIA staff and volunteers.

The Matching Grant Program is administered through The Foundation staff and monitored by the Board of Research and Education Advisors (BREA). The BREA will approve proposed projects for funding, allocate funds, review projects submitted for the research competition, select the winners, and review the final accounting of funds spent on the projects. The rules governing the matching grants program are as follows.

To be considered for a Foundation Research Matching Grant, the chapter or institute must:

A. Submit a proposal to The IIA Research Foundation.

  1. Proposals may be submitted at any time, but should generally adhere to the schedule recommended in this manual.
  2. A signed statement must accompany proposals from the author(s). The statement will waive all rights and give The Foundation sole permission to reproduce, photocopy, or otherwise distribute the report.
  3. Chapter or institute research projects are usually for a duration of one year or less, although other projects will be considered if they are appropriately supported.
  4. The proposed research should contribute to the advancement of the internal audit profession. Projects to determine participation at local meetings, when to hold meetings, meeting structure, recommended subjects to cover, etc. are not viewed as suitable research for matching grant qualification. Salary surveys, job description analysis, and audit training programs at the local level are types of research considered for participation.
  5. Proposals should identify the topic, discuss the importance of the topic, and discuss how the topic will be researched. Proposals should not exceed three pages, exclusive of exhibits and applicable resumes.

B. Include a proposed budget for the project.

C. Include a letter stating the commitment (restriction) of chapter or institute funds signed by the president.

D. Include at least one internal audit practitioner on the research project team.

E. Plan to submit the resulting report for the annual Donald E. Ricketts Research Award competition.

Special notes for institutes outside the United States:

  • Papers are NOT restricted to an English-language format. Papers submitted in another language must have an ABSTRACT submitted with the project. This abstract, written in English, should be from one-half to one page in length.
  • Research projects from outside the United States must be administered through the appropriate national institute. A letter of support from the national institute must be included with the proposal.

If your project meets these criteria, please submit your proposal, indicating how the project will meet the criteria, to The IIA Research Foundation. You will be informed as to whether your project was determined to meet the above criteria by the Board of Research and Education Advisors. If it does (and most will), The Foundation will match the committed research funds at 50 percent up to a maximum of US $500 per chapter or institute per year.

At the completion of the project, the research report must be submitted in the annual Donald E. Ricketts Research Award competition. Along with the report, the chapter or institute must submit an accounting for the funds spent during the project.
