  • Do establish an Advocacy & PR Committee that comprises dedicated and enthusiastic members.
  • Do involve all members by inviting them to share their ideas.
  • Do build relationships with governments, regulators, oversight bodies, and other professional associations whose decisions often impact internal auditors.
  • Do work with your local media to garner exposure and visibility for internal auditing as a valuable partner to management

  • Do promote the hallmarks of internal audit professionalism - compliance with the Code of Ethics and the International Standards for the Professional practice of Internal Auditing (Standards), quality, certification, and continued education.
  • Do identify the profession to students as an ideal career choice.
  • Do recognize the efforts of your Advocacy & PR Committee members.
  • Do contact us at PR@theiia.org, if you need guidance along the way!
  • Don't try to do it all alone.
  • Don't give up if your early efforts don't produce any results.
  • Don't dismiss the idea because you are "too small" or "too busy."
  • Don't use only the traditional methods for advocating and promoting the profession.
  • Don't ignore the potential for elevating the profession through good PR and advocacy.
  • Don't sit by quietly, while the voices of others are being heard.
  • Don't take your hardest workers for granted.
  • Don't underestimate the difference your advocacy efforts can make.
  • Don't delay planning for your IMAP entry!
