Oversight and Audit Committee Restored

Richard Chambers, president and CEO of the Institute of Internal Auditors commended the Mayor and City Commission of Brownsville, TX on the recent, unanimous vote to restore the city’s Oversight and Audit Committee. Chambers wrote a letter to Mayor Trey Mendez applauding the restoration and stated how “The IIA recognizes the important role that an oversight and audit committee provides in the oversight of the financial reporting process”. Also, Chambers emphasized that as a former member of the Audit Board for the City of Orlando, Fla., he has “seen the benefits of having a truly independent oversight and audit committee extend far beyond financial practices and reporting”. In closing, he stated, “A strong audit committee plays a crucial role in the detection and deterring of fraud and helps to ensure the effectiveness of all government audits” and provided The IIA’s “Model Audit Committee Charter” to assist in establishing an effective audit committee.
