The Vision 2035 study revealed that one of the most significant hurdles internal auditors face is being misinterpreted. As a Chief Audit Executive (CAE), I can personally attest to this struggle; It took considerable effort to shift perceptions and gain the recognition. This session will combine insights on how effective stakeholder engagement and a well-crafted Internal Audit Strategic Plan can empower CAEs to enhance the internal audit function's performance, drawing from real-world experiences.

In line with the updated Global Internal Audit Standards, CAEs need to develop and implement a strategic plan for their function, which aligns actions to achievement of their team’s mandate and future vision. Internal Audit teams can maximize their value to their organization by taking a collaborative, purpose-driven approach to strategic planning which clearly aligns IA’s activities with the goals and objectives of the wider organization.
This session will provide participants with a framework and templates supporting creation of their own, organizationally aligned, value-add Internal Audit strategic plan. During the session, participants will walkthrough development of an example IA strategic plan, leaving them with ideas for creation or modification of their own plan and take-aways to support implementation.

- Reminder of the value of strategic planning in Internal Audit (for IA teams, their companies, and their stakeholders) and the strategic planning requirements under the Global Internal Audit Standards.
- Communication of a time-tested, effective, efficient format and process which can be used by participants to develop or modify their own Internal Audit strategic plan.
- Discussion of common components of IA strategic plans that participants might want to include in their own plans, including activities that are aligned to the Global Internal Audit Standard requirements, Vision 2035, and other current industry topics and business happenings.
- Review of examples of strategic plan communication and reporting templates which clearly and concisely support governance and oversight requirements.
- Discussion of lessons learned and tips and tricks that have been gathered from using this approach to Internal Audit strategic planning over the years.
