Building on the concepts introduced in the Strengthening Ethical Auditing and Kind Communication in Governance webinar, this session moves beyond theory and into practical application of how kindness strengthens compliance, courage, and psychological safety while improving the quality of assurance relationships and audit conversations.

We will walk through common audit scenarios and discuss how kind communication can foster cultures where ethical feedback becomes a catalyst for trust. Participants will gain practical techniques for applying emotional intelligence, maintaining professionalism under pressure, and fostering trust while still delivering clear, objective audit outcomes.

At The IIA, Janet spearheads the development and implementation of people strategies focused on talent acquisition, employee growth, engagement, learning, diversity, retention, and team collaboration. In close partnership with the leadership team, she plays a key role in building a dynamic, inclusive culture aligned with The IIA’s mission to advance the internal audit profession.

A global citizen, Janet has lived and worked in five countries, bringing diverse cultural perspectives that enrich her leadership and her teams. Janet holds an MBA in Human Resources and is a SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP). Javier Faleato is the Executive Vice President of Global Institute Relations & Professional Pathways at The IIA. Before joining The IIA’s global headquarters, Javier was the Chief Executive Officer of IIA Spain. With more than 20 years of experience in internal audit, corporate governance, and risk management, Javier has developed expertise in optimizing global member services, improving key stakeholder collaboration, and engaging with a robust volunteer network. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and French.

At The IIA, Javier manages relationships with 121 National Institutes and associated organizations, focusing on growth and collaboration opportunities worldwide. He also serves as Executive Director of the Internal Audit Foundation, the preeminent global resource of The IIA dedicated to innovative research, academic advancement, and developing professional pathways.

A frequent international conference speaker, Javier has also taught at IIA seminars and conferences around the world. He has published several articles in professional journals, co-authored “Internal Auditing Fundamentals,” and was a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission task force of Spain, which produced “Internal Control Over Financial Reporting for listed companies.”

Javier earned a bachelor’s and master's degree in business administration and marketing from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and completed the Advanced Management Program at IE Business School. He is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), holds a Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA), is Certified in Control Self-Assessment (CCSA), and holds the COSO Internal Control Certificate. He has also served on The IIA’s Global Nominations Committee (2019-2020) and International Relations Committee (2013-2016) and was Chairman of the Board of technology start-up Evicertia (2012-2022).

Jessica Mahoney is the Director of Learning Content Development at the IIA, where she leads the strategy and development of professional education programs across instructor-led training, on-demand learning, executive education, webinars, and publications to deliver globally relevant learning experiences that support member growth. Jessica holds a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Association for Talent Development (ATD) credential, reflecting her expertise at the intersection of internal audit and professional learning.

With nearly seven years at the IIA and a diverse background spanning research, education, and international professional services, Jessica brings a systems-level approach to building scalable learning ecosystems aligned to business strategy and workforce performance. Her work is driven by a passion for designing professional development that meets the evolving needs of internal audit professionals worldwide and delivers measurable organizational impact.
