IAP 2025

IAP exam

To assist our Internal Audit Practitioner™ (IAP™) candidates, this page was created to provide answers to common questions related to the syllabus and exam updates occurring in 2025.

Information is subject to change.

What is changing?

  1. The topic areas on the IAP exam syllabus will be updated to:
    • Bring the Internal Audit Practitioner program up to date with current global practices.
    • Provide more in-depth coverage of internal audit fundamentals.
    • Achieve greater alignment among The IIA’s core certifications.
    • Create a student pathway to the Certified Internal Auditor designation.
  2. The IAP is being made a permanent designation with 20 hours of annual CPE required.
  3. Additional languages are being added to support global accessibility efforts.
  4. Waiver for CIA Part 1 provides a streamlined pathway into CIA program. (exclusions apply)

Do you already qualify to claim the IAP designation?

Individuals who previously earned the IAP—whether active or expired—can now proudly claim it as a permanent designation.

    • Expired IAPs: You have been automatically reactivated, and your IAP designation is now permanent.
    • Active IAPs: All currently active IAPs have now been granted permanent status.

If you are a Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) or if you ever passed Part 1 of the CIA exam, you are now eligible to claim the IAP.

  • Certified Internal Auditors (CIAs): Please submit an IAP application in CCMS.
  • Challenge Exam Pathway: If you earned your CIA through a Challenge Exam, submit an IAP application in CCMS and then open a new case under the Help tab in CCMS to complete the process.
  • Part 1 Passers: Please submit an IAP application in CCMS.

These changes provide greater recognition for professionals at various stages of their internal audit careers. Certification renewal requirements begin in 2026.

IAP syllabus

Candidates pursuing the IAP designation will become certified by taking the CIA® part 1 exam.

The schedule below outlines when each language will transition from the 2019 to the 2025 CIA part 1 syllabus.
