Welcome to the IIA Southwest Virginia Chapter
In the fall of 1980, a small group of individuals from the internal auditing profession met to discuss the formation of a local chapter of The Institute of Internal Auditors. The chapter name was chosen to reflect the regional membership of the chapter. The Institute of Internal Auditors, Inc., granted a charter to the Southwest Virginia Chapter on November 7, 1980.
The Southwest VA Chapter is primarily located in Appalachian mountain region of Virginia. The chapter started in 1990 and continues to grow, with over 100 members today.
The Chapter is proud to have achieved gold Chapter Achievement Program status every year since 2006, highlighting the success of the Chapter in providing top-notch networking and training opportunities for our members. Each year our chapter provides training, education, and networking opportunities to chapter members as well other professionals in the area. Please browse our chapter website if you are interested in any training opportunities we offer, or feel free to contact us at Chapter175@iiachapters.org.

Thank you for visiting the Southwest Virginia IIA Chapter’s website! I hope that you find the newly designed website as a nice repository of information about our local IIA chapter.
My name is Brian Pendleton, and I am serving as your Chapter President through the 2021-2022 term ending May 31, 2022. My time as a President the past year and a half has been a rewarding experience, giving me an appreciation for the day to day work of our members throughout the area. Our members are dedicated professionals serving a variety of companies, from government agencies promoting transparency and accountability, small banks navigating an ever-changing regulatory environment, manufacturers looking for new ways to innovate their products and processes, and much more.
As a chapter, we are focused on goals that align with the IIA’s strategic initiatives:
- Continuing Professional Education – Provide quality training opportunities to local professionals.
- Certification Growth – Promote the value of IIA certifications for the advancement of the profession and making our members stronger assets to their organizations.
- Advocacy – Support IIA headquarters initiatives and highlight relevant research that promotes the profession.
- Academic Relations – Promote the value of internal audit to students as a career path and strengthening ties to academia.
We have a great group of volunteers that participate as Officers and Board of Governors who help with these initiatives. While we are able to do a lot as a small chapter, all of our members can help us with our mission of advancing the internal audit profession. We are continuously looking to plan for the future and in need of volunteers willing to lend their skills. I encourage anyone who has ideas or a willing mindset to reach out to me or one of our other officers and get involved!
