IIA Congratulates New SEC Chairman

April 30, 2021

The Institute of Internal Auditors sent a letter of congratulations to Gary Gensler, newly appointed chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, welcoming the opportunity to continue its work with the SEC in recognizing and supporting internal audit in publicly traded U.S. companies. In the letter, The IIA urged Gensler and the SEC to take “concrete steps . . . to improve governance in publicly traded companies with the goal of protecting investors, other stakeholders, and the general public.” Crucial to effective governance in the public or private sector is a well-resourced, independent internal audit function. The IIA reiterated its call on the SEC to require all publicly traded companies to have an internal audit function.
