00:00:02 The IIA
Welcome to the All Things Internal Audit Fraud, where things are not always what they seem.
00:00:07 The IIA
Each episode brings you a fictionalized fraud story inspired by real events with plenty of twists, red flags, and lessons for internal auditors along the way.
00:00:21 The IIA
A full court fraud.
00:00:24 The IIA
Part 1, cracks in the facade.
00:00:27 The IIA
Lordton University looked like a picture of success.
00:00:31 The IIA
Its Midwestern campus was beautiful, enrollment was growing, and its men's basketball team had just made a run in the national tournament.
00:00:43 The IIA
But internal auditor Annette Parker was about to find cracks beneath that polished facade.
00:00:50 The IIA
Parker had been assigned to audit the athletic department's accounts.
00:00:54 The IIA
During planning, she noted the areas of revenue that could be manipulated, as specified by the university's risk matrix.
00:01:02 The IIA
Among the six accounts she identified for the engagement, one stood out, money earned by renting the university's athletic facilities to outside organizations.
00:01:14 The IIA
The person in charge was Lucas Jackson, Lorton's associate athletic director and a former university basketball player.
00:01:23 The IIA
Jackson controlled the use of the athletic facilities, including the rental of the basketball courts, gymnasiums, and other athletic spaces to outside organizations.
00:01:34 The IIA
When Jackson missed the audit entrance conference, his assistant, Jonathan Fisher, attended instead.
00:01:43 The IIA
Parker asked Fisher for the rental scheduling records.
00:01:46 The IIA
He handed her four sheets of paper.
00:01:50 The IIA
Parker was confused.
00:01:51 The IIA
She knew how busy the facilities were.
00:01:54 The IIA
When she asked whether there were more records, Fisher told her Jackson handled that.
00:02:00 The IIA
He only kept the calendar.
00:02:02 The IIA
But when Parker reviewed the calendar, she noticed that it was fully booked.
00:02:08 The IIA
For Parker, the mismatch between the rental paperwork and the calendar was the first red flag.
00:02:18 The IIA
Part 2, getting the story on record.
00:02:22 The IIA
Parker needed to understand who had rented the facilities, how much they had paid, and where the money had gone.
00:02:29 The IIA
The calendar gave her a list of renters, but before contacting them, she interviewed Jackson.
00:02:37 The IIA
Parker did not yet have the full picture.
00:02:39 The IIA
Still, she wanted his version on record.
00:02:43 The IIA
She felt the documents would eventually reveal any contradictions in Jackson's answers.
00:02:48 The IIA
Jackson was usually charismatic and upbeat, but this time he was distant.
00:02:54 The IIA
He paused for long stretches after basic questions.
00:02:59 The IIA
He told Parker he alone managed the rental process and that all income went directly to Lorton University.
00:03:06 The IIA
But when she asked how payments were handled,
00:03:09 The IIA
He stumbled through an explanation about receiving checks and giving them to the office secretary for deposit.
00:03:16 The IIA
Parker did not rely on that explanation.
00:03:19 The IIA
She sent confirmation letters directly to the renters.
00:03:23 The IIA
Their responses changed everything.
00:03:30 The IIA
Part 3, Lookalike Accounts.
00:03:34 The IIA
Renters told Parker that Jackson required them to hand checks directly to him or mail them to his home.
00:03:41 The IIA
When one renter questioned those instructions, Jackson implied that failing to follow the way could cost the organization access to the facility.
00:03:51 The IIA
The checks were made payable to entities that sounded connected to the university.
00:03:57 The IIA
One was the Lorton Athletics Fund.
00:04:00 The IIA
Over five years, more than $216,000 flowed into that account through checks labeled Lorton BB, LU Gem, Lorton University B-Ball, and similar descriptions.
00:04:16 The IIA
But it was not a university account.
00:04:19 The IIA
Jackson controlled it, and the bank listed his home as the address of record.
00:04:25 The IIA
Another group of renters revealed a second account called Gym Rentals of Lorton.
00:04:30 The IIA
Jackson had listed himself as the sole owner of this business account and estimated annual sales of approximately $134,000.
00:04:41 The IIA
He tried to make the account appear legitimate by giving the bank documents tied to an unrelated corporation, Lorton Athletic and Faculty Foundation Incorporated.
00:04:52 The IIA
which was never an active entity affiliated with the university.
00:04:57 The IIA
Altogether, Jackson had redirected $590,000 in payments intended for the university into three bank accounts that he personally controlled.
00:05:10 The IIA
He used the money for his mortgage, personal credit cards, daycare, landscaping,
00:05:16 The IIA
utilities, dry cleaning, roofing projects, department store purchases, and gifts for his wife.
00:05:33 The IIA
Part 4, the final buzzer.
00:05:37 The IIA
Once Parker had assembled the renter's confirmations, bank records, and payment documentation, she briefed senior university officials.
00:05:46 The IIA
They decided the evidence supported a criminal case,
00:05:50 The IIA
whether Jackson confessed or not, and coordinated with campus police.
00:05:57 The IIA
When confronted, Jackson broke down and admitted using the funds for personal expenses.
00:06:03 The IIA
Investigators obtained an arrest warrant and Lorton terminated his employment.
00:06:09 The IIA
Jackson later pleaded guilty to theft and misapplication of university funds.
00:06:16 The IIA
He was sentenced to six months of house arrest
00:06:19 The IIA
and the university recovered restitution through its insurance.
